Scarify, aeration and top dressing the lawn

This is a good one to get the children earning their keep!
  1. Use a lawn rake (V shaped rake) to rake over the entire lawn, don’t be afraid to get stuck in – you’re trying to remove the weaker grass and encourage new stronger growth.
  2. Once this is done use a garden fork to make holes in the lawn, every 6 – 8 inches (you can buy aeration forks which have holes in the ends to remove soil but using a normal garden folk is fine).
  3. Once this is completed you can top dress the lawn, there are different types of top dressing but a normal one is a mix of soil, compost and sand – this gives the soil a healthy kick and the sand will allow for better drainage.
  4. Cover the lawn with the top dressing and brush into the holes.
