Contemporary Family Garden

The brief for this project was to create a modern, contemporary-style garden that included a water feature, large patio, raised vegetable beds and a play area.
The plot was backed by a large beech hedge, which the owners wanted to have removed and replaced by fencing.
I designed a garden with the contemporary theme very much in mind – using granite paving slabs for the patio and, instead of removing the whole hedge, it was kept and used as a feature, framed by a modern baton fence.
The existing patio around the conservatory was removed and the granite paving continued around the house where the raised sleeper beds were built, surrounded by slate chippings.
A mowing strip was put into place around the lawn, and I created a small bed along the new fence for the water feature. A large barked play area was tucked into the back corner.
So that the family could enjoy their new garden after dark, I incorporated into the design uplighters on both the water feature and hedge. To complement this and add a further modern twist, I installed strip lighting along the edge of the patio, giving a subtle highlighting effect.
